2025 Field - The largest ever!
For many years the Amity Badminton Club was the custodian of the Albany Tournament. A round robin competition, played over two days, has traditionally been played in early August each year.
In 2022, the Great Southern Badminton Association took over the management of the tournament and, in 2023, expanded the field from 48 participants to 64. Building on this momentum, the 2024 tournament saw even greater success, with a remarkable 80 participants, marking another significant milestone in the event’s growth and popularity. The 2025 tournament continued this upward trajectory, successfully introducing a new divisional format and drawing a record 96 players from across regional WA.
Building on the success of the expanded field and divisional format introduced in 2025, the Albany Tournament will continue with the same structure in 2026.
With 96 competitors across two divisions, the format provides a more balanced and inclusive competition, allowing players to compete against opponents of similar ability while creating opportunities for a broader range of participants, particularly those from regional areas. The larger field continues to strengthen the tournament’s atmosphere, diversity, and sense of community, bringing together players of all skill levels from across the state.
Following its successful return in 2025, the Saturday evening tournament meal will once again be a feature of the 2026 event, providing players, officials, and supporters with an opportunity to socialise and strengthen the sense of community that has become an important part of the tournament experience.
The 2026 tournament will take place during a significant year for Albany as the city celebrates its Bicentennial, marking 200 years since its founding. While the Albany Tournament has been a longstanding fixture on the regional badminton calendar for many years, the 2026 edition provides an opportunity to acknowledge this historic milestone by bringing together players in the spirit of competition, community, and sport.
