2025 Field - The largest ever!
For many years the Amity Badminton Club was the custodian of the Albany Tournament. A round robin competition, played over two days, has traditionally been played in early August each year.
In 2022, the Great Southern Badminton Association took over the management of the tournament and, in 2023, expanded the field from 48 participants to 64. Building on this momentum, the 2024 tournament saw even greater success, with a remarkable 80 participants, marking another significant milestone in the event’s growth and popularity. The 2025 tournament continued this upward trajectory, successfully introducing a new divisional format and drawing a record number of players from across the region.
Building on the increased field of the 2024 tournament, we continued to innovate and improve in 2025.
One of the key changes introduced for the 2025 tournament was the implementation of divisions, designed to create a more balanced and inclusive competition. Dividing players by skill level allowed stronger players to face opponents of similar ability, ensuring they were continually challenged and pushed to improve. At the same time, less experienced players were placed in a division where the competition felt more manageable, helping them feel less intimidated and more confident in their abilities.
This new approach also enabled us to expand the field even further, providing more opportunities for players to participate. By introducing divisions, we were able to accommodate a wider range of participants, particularly from regional areas, giving them a chance to experience tournament-level competition. This was crucial for players who might not have had access to larger, more competitive events, as it created opportunities for regional talent to compete on a broader stage.
The increased field size not only boosted participation but also enhanced the tournament’s diversity and atmosphere, making it even more dynamic. We fostered a sense of community and support among players from different backgrounds and skill levels across the region. This expansion helped ensure fairer play, encouraged growth for players of all levels, and contributed to a supportive environment where everyone could thrive.
